20 Style Tips On How To Wear Skater Style

When I was in high school, pop-punk and emo music was huge – and so was the fashion that went along with it. I exclusively shopped at PacSun, and my favorite brands included Roxy, Billabong, Volcom, and Hurley. I loved to wear skater sneakers, casual tops, studded belts, and beanies. I did not skateboard, but I looked like I could have skateboarded (maybe). Basically, I was a poser. It’s fine, I’ve accepted it. I’m sure there will be people who read this post and think it’s lame AF because they believe skater style should be reserved for people who live the lifestyle. I mean, I get it, but also… whatever. If you want to rock the look, go for it! You don’t need to have an actual board as an accessory.

Skater style is hard to describe. I feel like it’s a mix of so many different things: a little bit of grunge, a little bit of normcore, a little bit of vintage, a little bit of early 2000s. It’s casual and comfortable, but aside from that, it’s difficult to explain. I know what it’s not, though – it’s not super put together, it’s not perfect, it’s not preppy, and it’s not traditionally feminine. It’s meant to be easy, laid-back, and simple. And it works.

So, if you want to wear skater style, I’ve got your back. Here are a few ways to nail the look, even if you don’t own a skateboard. Don’t worry – I won’t tell.

1. Wear a logo tee with jeans and sneakers. Preferably Thrasher. I mean, it doesn’t have to be, obviously, but it’s super popular and just kind of embodies the style.

2. Keep things simple with basic layers. You can wear a long sleeved shirt over a white tee with jeans and sneakers – add a beanie for extra warmth.

3. Skater style doesn’t have to involve sneakers – ankle boots with a low heel work well too. Pair yours with ripped jeans and a striped tee for something simple and cool.

4. Pair a denim mini skirt with a cropped sweater and a pair of sneakers to keep it casual and make it work for chilly weather.

5. One of the biggest things with this trend can be mixing super casual pieces with a more dressed up piece – like a sweatshirt under a nice winter coat.

6. Keep things super easy with a cropped sweater, jeans, and sneakers. It’s minimalist and still cute.

7. If you want to be a little bit more dressed up, pair a denim skirt with tights, Dr. Martins, and a cozy cardigan. The shoes give the rest of the outfit a bit of an edge.

8. Accessories can make all the difference – show off some funky socks with ankle length jeans and slip on sneakers.

9. An oversized sweatshirt isn’t just for lazy days at home. Wear yours with skinny jeans and sneakers, and add a hat if you want.

10. A beanie and a leather jacket are two skater style staples. Wear them with a plaid shirt, graphic tee, and cool flat ankle boots.

11. Keep things simple and cozy with jeans and a plaid shirt – another skater style staple. Add a bomber jacket for extra layers.

12. Make your look a little more unique by wearing an oversized tee showing off an old movie or band.

13. Ripped jeans and a cropped tee work for fall with an athletic windbreaker and a pair of sneakers.

14. Make your shorts wearable for fall and winter by wearing them with over the knee socks, sneakers, a beanie, and a bomber jacket.

15. Classic Converse shoes give every outfit you wear a more casual look, even something as chic as jeans, a sweater, and a leather jacket.

16. For outwear, opt for an oversized, baggy denim jacket rather than something fitted.

17. Layer a plaid shirt over a crop top and jeans to make them work for fall.

18. Add a baseball cap to any outfit, along with bright sneakers.

19. Dress up ripped jeans with a long sweater, a round hat, a choker, and some edgy ankle boots.

20. Mix it up with a long winter coat over your skater style basics.
